Among the many many well-known tourist routes of our vast country are gaining more and more popular attractions in Navoi region. Today special attention uses located in the tract Sarmysh - sai biggest gallery on the ground of ancient rock paintings
.
In Sarmishsai, it found more than 200 archaeological sites, including burial sites, mounds, remains of settlements and workshops on processing of flint, but the most interesting are the rock paintings; the gorge is 2.5 km long, predstavlyayushem a central part of the complex Sarmishsai, found over 5000 (according to some estimates - more than 10 000) petroglyphic images. Drawings are focused mainly on the black rocks in the central part of the gorge, on almost every flat surface, sometimes multiple images on one stone.

Most of the detected image dates back to the Bronze Age (3000-900 BC. E.), But there are also petroglyphs, relating on the one hand to the Eneolithic (4000-3000 BC. E.), Neolithic (6000-4000 BC. e) and Mesolithic (15 000-6000 years BC), and the other -..... to the Saka-Scythian period (900-100 years BC) and the Middle Ages (before 1500 BC).. . The earliest petroglyphs Sarmishsay date from approximately 9000 BC. e., as the most recent include not only paintings, but also texts written in Arabic script and telling about the life of the dervishes. Among the earliest of stages includes images made in "bitreugolnom" style of the Upper Paleolithic, other early styles include ornamental and delicate and contour the silhouette. Among the petroglyphs - images of people and animals (including already extinct in this area), hunting scenes, everyday work. A popular story is a loop five-toed hands.

Research of rock paintings in the tract Sarmishsai began in the middle of the XX century with the expedition Mahandarinskogo detachment under the leadership of J. G. Gulyamova. Sarmishsay image documentation was continued by local researchers George. Kabirov and BS Shalatonin, and since 1987 studies in the area led the representative of the Institute of Archaeology Muhitlin Khujanazarov. Based on materials from expeditions and long-term studies published articles and a book author.

Sarmishsai is also an important natural site: its territory recorded 650 plant species, of which 27 are endemic. From animals found in Sarmishsai in the Red Book of Uzbekistan entered the Central Asian cobra, black vulture and Kyzylkum argali.
